What are the benefits of scooping?
Scooping is an important life skill that we all need to master in order to self feed. Babies and toddlers need lots of opportunites to scoop in order to develop and refine their fine motor control, and in turn manage different utensils. Preschoolers, and older children, can work on their precision, while role playing and exploring important math concepts.
What materials can I offer my child to scoop?
For mouthing babies and toddlers, offer dry cereal, popped popcorn, chopped up fruit, cooked vegetables (peas and sweetcorn are good), cooked pasta or anything else that is edible.
For preschoolers, and older children, the possibilities are endless, and all will provide a different scooping experience. Our favourites are: dried foods such as rice, oats, quinoa, lentils; buttons and beads; waterbeads; jelly and ice cream!
